Grimes is the pseudonym of Claire Elise Boucher, a singer-songwriter and experimental electro pop producer. Her music is characterized by 80s-influenced synths, pop sensibility, and high-pitched, ethereal vocals that sit in the background.

Upon releasing her first two albums, Geidi Primes and Halfaxa, in 2010 (Arbutus Records), and a split record with d’Eon called Darkbloom in 2011, she increased her fanbase and captured the attention of many. The attention led to a record deal with label 4AD and her third album, Visions, released in 2012, which she produced entirely on Garageband. The album received mass critical acclaim and pushed Grimes closer to the spotlight. At the end of 2013, she signed to be managed by Roc Nation, and following some sparse releases, released Art Angels in 2015. This album once again showed Boucher’s skilled craft, but with catchy choruses that she’d bend and twist to expand the possibilities of music.

Armed with passion, eclecticism, and a distinct sense of confidence, Grimes’ music excites and enthralls her listeners, challenging them emotionally and psychologically. Grimes’ discography reflects her obvious versatility—feminist club bangers, “escaping into art”, politically-coded tracks regarding sexual assault, and lyrics surrounding numb artistry. Her inability to read music doesn’t affect her quality whatsoever; she produces and engineers all her tracks herself.

Lockdown Locha: Salman, Akshay’s Eid Releases On Hold As Filmmakers Take The OTT Route

The week around Eid ul-Fitr is a carnival for multiplexes teeming with movie buffs united by their shared love for Salman Khan. Undeterred by an overnight hike in ticket prices, they wait for their turn to see their beloved Bhai—as the 54-year-old star is known among his die-hard admirers—unleash magic yet again on the big screen.

But as fate would have it, there is no activity at all now, let alone celebrations, at multiplexes, just a deathly silence. Reeling under the impact of extended lockdowns, theatres across the country have been wearing a desolate look shorn of glitz for more than two-and-a-half months. Worse still, there are no signs of things looking up anytime soon.

This unexpected twist was not there in the original B-town script until March this year when everything looked hunky-dory on the business front. With Akshay Kumar setting up a clash of titans by opting for an Eid release of his eagerly-awaited Laxmmi Bomb on May 22 alongside Salman’s Radhe: Your Most Wanted Bhai, multiplex owners seemed to be in for a double delight.

Almost all of Salman’s Eid releases were mega blockbusters, creating a record enviable enough to deter the biggest of his competitors. However, buoyed by his recent successes, Akshay dared to grab a slice of Salman’s box-office pie on Eid. It was, of course, a win-win situation for multiplex owners, who looked forward to the imminent showdown between two of the biggest superstars with bated breath, little realising what was in store for them in the weeks ahead.

Forced by the prolonged closure of cinema halls, with little chance of them reopening soon, filmmakers are now turning to the over-the-top (OTT) platforms for direct digital releases of their movies. On May 22, a Friday when the industry expected a Salman-versus-Akshay duel, it will be Nawazuddin Siddiqui’s chance to hog the limelight by default as his long-in-the-making Ghoomketu is bypassing the traditional route of a theatrical release to stream on Zee5 for OTT audiences. And this may be just the tip of the iceberg for the multi-billion-rupee industry.

While Radhe: Your Most Wanted Bhai’s (top left) release has been postponed, Gulabo Sitabo (top right) and Shakuntala Devi (bottom) are releasing on OTT platforms.

There are other movies with digital premieres in the pipeline, most notably Shoojit Sircar’s Gulabo Sitabo and Vidya Balan’s Shakuntala Devi, a biopic of the legendary ‘human computer’. Sircar’s Amitabh Bachchan-Ayushmann Khurrana starrer will be released directly on Amazon Prime Video on June 12. Five big movies from the south—Ponmagal Vandhal (Tamil), Penguin (Tamil/Telugu), Law (Kannada), Sufiyum Sujatayum (Malayalam) and French Biryani (Kannada) will also stream on digital platforms within the next three months in the face of growing uncertainty over reopening of theatres.

“At Prime Video, we believe in listening to what our consumers want and working backwards from there,” says Vijay Subramaniam, director and head, content, of the Indian arm of the global OTT platform. “Over the past two years, Prime Video has become the destination of choice for our customers to watch new releases across languages within weeks of their theatrical releases. We are taking this one step further, with seven of India’s most anticipated films premiering exclusively on it, bringing the cinematic experience to their doorsteps.” Adds Gaurav Gandhi, director and country general manager, Amazon Prime Video India, “We feel truly excited about this initiative and also confident of delighting our members with this offering.”

Will They?

Coolie No. 1.

But what may delight the growing tribe of the OTT audience has come as a shocker to multiplex owners, who are crying foul over these developments. Until now, most movies would reach Amazon Prime Video, Netflix etc only after a few weeks of their theatrical releases. Therefore, filmmakers’ decision to opt for direct digital streaming sent alarm bells ringing for theatre owners. Fearing a loss in revenues in the long run, INOX, a leading theatre chain, reacted angrily, calling it a disconcerting move. “INOX would like to express extreme displeasure and disappointment on an announcement by a production house to release their movie directly on an OTT platform by skipping the theatrical window run. The decision of the production house to deviate from the globally prevalent content windowing practice is alarming and disconcerting,” it announced a day after filmmaker Shoojit Sircar revealed plans to take Gulabo Sitabo directly to Amazon Prime Video.

Reminding filmmakers of the ‘mutually beneficial partnerships’ they have shared over the years, INOX stressed the need for standing shoulder to shoulder. “Such acts, though isolated, vitiate the atmosphere of mutual partnership and paint these content producers as fair-weather friends rather than all-weather, lifelong partners,” it said, adding that it would now be “constrained to examine” its options while reserving all rights, including taking retributive measures in “dealing with such fair-weather friends”.

INOX’s strongly worded statement evoked a sharp response from the Producers Guild of India. “Statements that call for ‘retributive measures’ against producers who decide to take their movies directly to OTT platforms—especially at a time when cinemas are unfortunately closed for the foreseeable future—do not lend themselves to a constructive or collaborative dialogue on the way forward for the industry,” it said in a two-page statement. “The production sector (just like the exhibition sector) is suffering hundreds of crores of losses daily as elaborate and expensive sets erected for under-production films have had to be taken down. Huge cancellation charges are being borne by producers even as interest costs are mounting on amounts raised to fund films.”

Gunjan Saxena.

But INOX is not alone. Another multiplex major, PVR Pictures, which operates a cinema circuit comprising 841 screens at 176 properties in 71 cities in India and Sri Lanka, also expressed its disappointment with producers deciding to go straight to streaming platforms. “We believe that theatrical release is the best way for audiences to experience the labour and creative genius of our filmmakers. This has been so for decades and not just in India but globally,” says Kamal Gianchandani, CEO, PVR Pictures. “The COVID-19 crisis has caused an unfortunate shutdown of cinemas. We are confident that once we get to the other side of this crisis, there would be enough and more pent-up demand from cine-goers who have been cooped up at homes for the past many weeks. We are likely to see demand on a sustained basis once we reopen.”

There is no guarantee that viewers will flock to theatres when shows resume.

Gianchandani hopes that producers will accede to their request to hold back the release of their films till cinemas reopen. But as Amitabh Bachchan says on his official blog, it’s a situation that cannot be altered now. “.. finances and other contractual obligations need consideration .. not just my films there are other artists too .. they also need to space out their films .. recovery of investment .. cannot take forever .. if the digital price is amicable then they go for it .. it is the future .. the option to release in theatres later always open .. that contained in the terms .. so yes in time there could be theatre release as well .. others wait for the results of digital release to make decisions on their films .. (sic)” he wrote on May 14.

Thankfully for multiplexes, none of the big-ticket extravaganzas starring reigning Bollywood superstars, their biggest revenue generators, have fallen for the OTT bait yet. Rohit Shetty’s multi-starrer Sooryavanshi featuring Akshay Kumar, Ajay Devgn and Ranveer Singh along with Katrina Kaif, which was supposed to release on March 24, and Kabir Khan’s Ranveer Singh-starrer ’83, which was slated for April 10, have been put on hold indefinitely. Similarly, Salman Khan’s big-budget Radhe: Your Most Wanted Bhai, said to be based on Korean action-thriller The Outlaws, will not be released soon.

Laal Singh Chaddha.

Meanwhile, speculation is rife that all these movies might be released directly on OTT platforms. There are also rumours about digital platforms offering astronomical sums to the makers of these films. The Radhe team, however, has denied that it was negotiating a deal worth Rs 250 crore with an OTT platform for the release of Salman’s next movie. ’83 director Kabir Khan too makes it clear that since his films are meant for a big-screen experience, he, along with other stakeholders, has decided to wait for the reopening of theatres. Filmmaker Karan Johar, whose Gunjan Saxena starring Janhvi Kapoor was slated for release on April 24, has cautioned the media against conjecturing about movies going directly to digital platforms. “My hugest request to my media friends not to reach any assumptions on our fraternity films … these are challenging times for the business and false news only makes the situation worse! Please wait for official news on any account!! This is a humble request (sic),” he tweeted.

Bollywood experts, however, believe that stars and filmmakers, howsoever big, cannot reverse the trend now. “The die is cast, but they remain in a denial mode. A few big studios with deep pockets may keep the release of their films on hold for a year or so, but what about small filmmakers who have borrowed money on steep interest rates? Can they afford to do that?” says a trade analyst on condition of anonymity.

Ajit Andhare, chief operating officer, Viacom18 Studios, says that the industry is in a crisis caused by an unprecedented situation. “Since it will take a while before normalcy and footfalls are restored, it is only reasonable for producers to unlock their investments through digital platforms,” he says. “This is more likely in the small-to-mid-film segments. Large films may or may not opt for these deals as their theatrical component is large and they can hold on for longer.”

Andhare claims that producers’ move to shift to OTT platforms should not be viewed as bypassing of theatres as they remain the most central component of the cinema value chain. “Normalcy will return. The only question is when,” he says.

It is this ‘when’ conundrum that is adding to filmmakers’ insecurities and driving them to OTT platforms. With the rapid rise in COVID-19 cases across the country—particularly in Mumbai, Hindi cinema’s biggest market—the prospects of theatres reopening soon look bleak. The lucrative overseas territory is also out of bounds, further aggravating filmmakers’ problems. Worse, there is no guarantee that the audience would flock to multiplexes immediately upon resumption of shows owing to fears of contagion and the need for social distancing.

All these factors have contributed to Bollywood’s gradual shift from theatres to OTT platforms. Already, there are talks about movies such as Varun Dhawan’s Coolie No. 1, Amitabh Bachchan’s Jhund, Janhvi Kapoor’s Gunjan Saxena and Rajkummar Rao’s Ludo going directly to OTT platforms in the weeks to come. Some say even Akshay Kumar’s Laxxmi Bomb might release soon on Disney-Hotstar. The pandemic has also cast a cloud on the timely release of many upcoming movies such as Aamir Khan’s Laal Singh Chaddha, Ranvir Kapoor’s Brahmastra and Alia Bhatt’s Gangubai Kathiawadi, which are all due later this year.

Interestingly, this is not a new phenomenon in Bollywood. Films like Rishi Kapoor’s Rajma Chawal (2018), Vicky Kaushal’s Love Per Square Foot (2018) and more recently, Sushant Singh Rajput’s Drive (2019) released directly on OTT platforms in the past without multiplexes batting an eyelid. Even in Hollywood, a movie as big as Martin Scorsese’s The Irishman (2019) followed the same digital route.

Industry watchers believe that all stakeholders in the Indian film industry—actors, filmmakers and exhibitors—will have to learn to live with the fact that the OTT platforms, a cheaper option than multiplexes, cannot simply be wished away. With penetration in about 4,000 towns in India and 200 other countries, Amazon Prime Video, Netflix etc are here to stay and might emerge as a game changer in the movie business. The film industry as a whole and multiplexes in particular should become attuned to this reality.

What is Eid Al Adha?

According to tradition, Eid Al Adha is held to honour Ibrahim’s willingness to sacrifice his son, after being instructed to do so by God. Prophet Ibrahim told his son of the dream, and the son then told his father to follow the order.

But God intervened, sending a sheep to take his sons place.

What are the remaining public holidays?

Eid Al Adha is the longest public holiday remaining in 2020, but there’s still a few more public holidays to come this year. The next one is Hijri, (Islamic New Year), which will be celebrated on Sunday August 23, which could mean an extra day off work.

Following that, the Prophet Muhammad’s birthday will be marked with a public holiday on Thursday October 29, 2020. December 1 marks Commemoration Day, formerly referred to as Martyr’s Day. It falls on a Tuesday in 2020, and combined with two days off for UAE National Day, will mean a five-day weekend.

UAE National Day, which in 2020, will mark the UAE’s 49th birthday. We’ll get two days off on Wednesday December 2 and Thursday December 3, so combined with Commemoration Day, will mean five days off for those that usually have Friday and Saturday as their weekend.

12 exquisitely beautiful childhood memories

Everything is different when you’re a child: the trees are higher, the colours are brighter, and every new day is more interesting that the last. Even more importantly, some things happen that stay in our memory for a long time – in fact, sometimes they end up being with us forever.

For those who remember those moments from their childhood, Bright Side collected the following beautiful anecdotes – from the amusing to the sublime and touching. Maybe something similar happened to you as well?

When I was seven: “Hurray! I am finally going with my grandma to the countryside!”
When I was 14: “Parents are so annoying with their rules!”
When I was 20: “It seems like grandma went crazy. She rips up the grass all day long. I would understand if it was next to the flowers or something, but what is wrong with the grass by the fence?”
At 25: “The countryside is only useful for having a barbecue…”
35: “Should we try to grow some radishes in the garden?”
45: “The garden’s full of veggies at last!”
60: “Look at the state of that fence, all the grass is growing next to it…”
78: “I have to carry their super heavy backpacks to the house. Neither my children nor my grandchildren help me with the garden. They say it’s not worth it, they can buy the groceries for me. And only my great grandson makes me happy. He is so excited that it’s summer again and we can go to the countryside. Life goes on…”

My dad was always the one who used to take me to kindergarten. One time during winter, the road was covered in ice. After a few unsuccessful attempts we got down on all fours and climbed up the hill. We both arrived just in time – I made it to breakfast at school, and my dad made it to work.

I remember it like it was yesterday.

We used to go to my grandfather’s bee farm out in the country. We’d travel out there on a bike with an extra seat, pedalling real quick. Grandma would feed us on a gallon of milk and home-made bread. When we arrived, we put leave milk in jars in the mountain river, so it would stay cool and wouldn’t go off. We ate freshly harvested honey with bread and drank milk. It was unforgettable.

For me, childhood memories are all made up of recollections of tasty food. I had this sandwich made up of two cookies and just some butter between them. Now that’s the taste of childhood! Tomorrow I’m going to grab a can of condensed milk; I just realised how much I miss it. You all know what I’m talking about!

When I was five, I was always convinced that my dad, when he came back from work in the evening, got bored while watching TV. That’s why I would always go to my room, grab some toys and deliberately break them. Then I’d bring them to my dad so he could fix him. I thought it made him happier…

My grandma used to work in a garage in a warehouse, and often took me with her to work. One time she didn’t keep her on eye on me, and I sneaked out. She found me inside the garage. I was standing next to a barrel of gold grains, rubbing the gold into my hair.  I thought I would look like Rapunzel! Although we washed my hair several times, I still left traces of gold wherever I went for a few weeks, like a fairy.

I remember vividly when my mom would tell me off by saying: “So if everybody started wearing ripped jeans, you would as well?” I don’t know who exactly it was who started that trend, but she turned out to be prophetically right…

This one winter my friends and I decided to try and do some pull-ups on the swings by our house. Everybody was wearing fur coats and mittens. We were just hanging their like sausages. I was the only one who more less succeeded. And then somebody asked if I could touch the metal part with my tongue. Yeah, I wasn’t the smartest kid…

I remember that when I was in the 5th grade, one time my parents woke me up in the morning as they always did. I asked them, “can I skip school today?” (this question was probably asked quite often by plenty of children). My dad responded: “Of course you can, if you get up, get dressed and make your bed quickly enough.” I credulously believed him, and did everything as fast and efficiently as I could…And then I learned that it was April Fools Day, and I had just 30 more minutes before I had to go to school.

When I was a child, I was often sent to the store to buy things. I’d always forget to buy something, and would be sent back to the store again. I wanted to make sure that the sales assistant didn’t get the impression that I was a foolish boy with a bad memory, so I would turn my jacket inside out, change my hairstyle, put on a different facial expression and speak in a lowered voice. I was a master of conspiracy.

Once, I heard that if a cat lies all curled up, it’s a sign of bad weather. I get it, I thought – I see who’s in charge here. And I started going around ‘uncurling’ curled-up cats, hoping the weather would improve.

I can’t believe that when I was a child I thought that people my current age behave like adults…

New Delhi: The festival of Eid-ul-Fitr falls at the end of the holy month of Ramadan in Islamic belief. The festival, like any other, is celebrated with prayer, greetings, family, friends and food. Given that this year, the festival is being celebrated as the world battles the COVID-19 pandemic, it may lead to a few dull festivities, but it definitely should not lead to dull spirits.

Whether with family, close friends, neighbours, or even all alone, good food can make any day feel like a festival and can uplift your mood instantly. This Eid, here are two recipes you must make at home to feast on, as you celebrate the festival during these testing times.

Chicken Kofta Curry

Chicken Kofta Curry

The first recipe can be described as delicious and juicy and is shared by Saba Rehan, Platefull, Homefoodi. The melt in mouth Mughlai cuisine is a must-try for chicken lovers looking for a change. Made usually during the festival of Eid, this dish made out of minced chicken balls is worth every praise. It does not take much time to prepare and is incredibly flavoursome. Made in gravy, it is ideal to be had with roomali Rotis or chapatis.

  • 250 grams minced chicken.
  • 1 onion and 2 tomatoes.
  • 1 spoon of ginger and garlic paste.
  • 1 egg (optional) & 1/2 cup of chickpea flour (or bread crumbs).
  • 2 spoon garam masala, 1 teaspoon of turmeric powder and red chilli powder.
  •  ½ teaspoon pepper, salt to taste.

Method of preparation –

  • Add salt, pepper, egg and chickpea flour to the minced chicken and stir well. Refrigerate the preparation for about 1 hour.

  • Holidays are sometimes subject to arbitrary last minute changes by local authorities, just as in any other part of the world. Major Religious Holidays in Qatar

There are two major religious celebrations in Qatar – Eid al Fitr and Eid al Adha, and these are also the major public holidays.

While Eid al Fitr is the end of fasting month of Ramadan, the Eid al Adha follows approximately 70 days after Eid al Fitr. Eid al Fitr happens to fall on the ninth month of Islamic calendar, which is based on the lunar months. Therefore, the dates are not fixed. The holidays are determined only a day in advance.

During the lunar month of Ramadan, which precedes Eid Al-Fitr, Muslims fast during the day and feast at night and there may be interruptions in normal business patterns. Several restaurants are closed during the day and there could be restrictions on smoking and drinking. This could last from two to ten days, depending on the region.

It is worthwhile to note that the weekend in Qatar runs over Friday and Saturday, with Friday being the main day of religious observance. Some businesses may work half a day on Thursday and then shut down for all of Friday. Some smaller shops may be shut all of Friday, or may open only after the afternoon call to prayer. Further, Qatar being a Muslim nation, expats may not get the traditional holidays for Christmas, New Year and Easter days.

Eid al Fitr means the festival of breaking your fast and marks the ending of the holy month. This festivity is celebrated for three days, and the 1st day morning, all the Muslims meet for offering the Eid prayer. Eid is also infused with diverse traditions in diverse countries. The majority of individuals utilize the three days of this festivity for the visitations. Some other customs comprise the Eidi, cash given to children on Eid, and wearing new dresses.

It starts with the 1st emergence of the new moon, so usually, the Muslims need to wait until the night before this festivity to confirm its date. The starting day differs each year and from one country to the other riding on the geographical location. Eid al Fitr is celebrated on the 1st day of the Islamic month Shawwal which falls in the 10th month of the calendar of Islamic. When Is The Eid Al Fitr This Year 2020?

Well, the date of this amazing festivity depends on the emergence of the new moon.  Eid Al Fitr comes at the ending of the Ramadan. The celebrations of Eid Al Fitr can start after the emergence of the new moon. This year the dates of Eid Al Fitr are expected to fall on 4th June 2020 but 5th June in Pakistan. However, it still depends on the new moon sighting. So it is always advisable to check with your local Masjid to know the exact date.

While the date of Eid Al Fitr would usually not be the same around the world but still a lot of communities decide to celebrate this festival on the same date as their sisters and brother around the world once the moon emerges above Mecca and the moon sighting is officially announced.

What Do Individuals Do?

A lot of Muslims go to communal prayers and listen to the sermon or khutba on the 1st day of the Shawwal, which is Eid Al Fitr as mentioned earlier. Such prayers are held in or outside the huge venues, like sports arenas, etc. A lot of Muslims might travel far to take part in such activities. A few communities organize diverse festivities, like communal meals or activities for kids, on this day.

If someone has not given zakat al-Fitr yet during the holy month of Ramadan, he/she can give it on this day. Zakat al-Fitr is a charity consisting of food, like dates, barley, wheat flour or raisins, or its monetary equal given to the people in need. A lot of Muslims might also arrange celebratory meals, wear new dresses, visit friends and family, and give candy or presents to kids. Eid cards can also be sent, frequently featuring the words Eid Mubarak which mean blessed Eid.

Eid Presents Ideas:

Eid is all about celebration, and on this day all the Muslims meet their friends and family member to celebrate, and delicious meals are prepared to share the love. But there is another important aspect of celebrating this day, which is giving Eidi or Eid gifts, especially to the younger members of the family. People also like to give Eid cards for greeting each other. If you have grandparents, then you can thank them for always being there for you through good and through bad and present them a beautiful bouquet of flowers with fragrant candles.

For the younger members of the family, Eidi is a completely different thing. As Eidi, you can give sweets, money or chocolates to the children. Or you can also go for the gifts that not just entertain your kids but also educate them.

Things You May Not Know About Eid Al Fitr:

  • It Is Held For Celebrating The End Of Fasting:

Throughout the holy month of Ramadan, all the Muslims across the globe fast from sunrise to sunset for honoring the holy month that the Holy Quran was revealed to the Prophet Mohammed (SAW). This day celebrates the ending of the month and the ending of fasting. The extended fasting is not only about food, but it also comprises avoiding taking any kind of drugs, smoking, drinking any liquids, and having sex.

  • It Starts When The 1st Sighting Of The New Moon Is Confirmed:

It does not start until the new moon emerges in the sky. Technically, that denotes that across the globe, Eid al Fitr begins at diverse times and even different days, riding on the location. For making it more uniform, a few Muslims celebrate Eid al Fitr when the new moon emerges over Mecca in place of their own locations.

  • It Is Also Recognized As Sweet Eid:

Different sweets and snacks are made particularly for this holiday. In Sudan, a lot of families enjoy Aseeda, a dish made from honey and wheat, while in Malaysia Kuih, sweet, colorful cakes are eaten. We all are extremely fond of the delicious Sevaiyaan made in Pakistan too.

  • The Festival Typically Lasts For 3 Days:

Eid al Fitr traditionally lasts for three days, but riding on how it falls on the calendar, the festivities and parties can last much longer. For instance, if the three days fall middle-week, the Muslims will probably still be rejoicing this festivity on the weekend.

  • There Are Prayers:

After getting dressed in new or clean dresses ready for the day, all the Muslims get together for the prayers in Masjids or some other outdoor locations. Afterward, they might visit their loved ones graves for praying and cleaning the gravesites.

  • Edi Al Fitr & Ramadan Are Held On Diverse Gregorian Dates Each Year:

The lunar cycles are the base for the Islamic calendar, as opposed to Gregorian one and its base is the solar cycle. New month begin and finish with every new moon. The standard new moon emerges every 29.53 days, so the lunar months are a little shorter as compared to the Gregorian ones, which frequently last thirty to thirty-one days. Thus, each year, Ramadan is held about ten days earlier than it was the last year, at least, it is, concerning the Gregorian calendar.
